Special Projects
Tree of Light
Over October half term OYAP Trust hosted the Tree of Light Olympic project. The project, which is part of the national Cultural Olympiad, ran across the Thames Valley with groups collaborating with artists, film-makers, dancers and storytellers to develop art inspired by trees.
At the Courtyard young people aged 11 to 25 worked with artist Miranda Bence-Jones to create a series of performances, animations and digital images reflecting a three day exploration of trees. With the Oxfordshire County Council Forest School participants took part in practical woodland activities including campfire building.
The resulting artwork will form part of the creation of next summer's huge Tree of Light performances, involving more than 1,200 people across the region. The centrepiece will be a giant sculpted tree, glowing with LED lights powered by electricity generated by cyclists and rowers.
The Big Noisy sculpture project took place over the Easter holidays, a group of young people worked with artist Giles Walker and the MAP team to build this massive sculpture from scrap materials. They designed the overall shape, cleaned all the old car parts and welded the frame together. Once the structure was built and safely installed the group could decide how it should look.. so then the sculpture was dismantled and the second week was all about decorating the recycled pipes, spraying patterns onto the car parts and deciding what other special features the creature would have.
The Completed Creature!
Still not sure what to call him, but he's looking awesome. Finishing touches/stencil artwork added by young people at the Courtyard this evening. Images by Andrew Fleming.
A big thanks to all young people and staff involved in the project, which was funded by OCC Youth Support Services and Cherwell District Council.
The sculpture will also feature in Oxfordshire Art Weeks this year - watch this space for details.
So come along and see Bicester’s very own resident transformer.
